BP… “What Does It Mean” for Health Career Pathways HS Students – 11.07.25

What does Blood Pressure mean and why do we care? Another opportunity for the San Diego Association for Men in Nursing to help shape the future generations of nursing and healthcare workers in San Diego!

Most children have seen a blood pressure cuff (A.K.A. sphygmomanometer ) but how many know how it works or can even pronounce it for that matter?

In collaboration with Grossmont Unified High School District Health Career Pathways, we have created some comprehensive, creative, and engaging curriculum to bring Blood Pressure measuring and understanding to our local high school health career pathways students.

Our Education Department leader and intern, along with 9 lovely volunteers went to Mesa Vista High School to chat with some high school seniors about blood pressure, teach them how to work the manual sphygmomanometer and share our education paths to Health Care.

Charlene Barrett is an RN student at MiraCosta College (Until 12/25!) with a clear focus on education and community outreach. A San Diego native, she is currently pursuing her second career after spending over a decade providing individualized childcare to families across the country. Charlene is an intern to the SDAMN Education Department, where she actively helps lead the Association's Blood Pressure courses at local high schools, in addition to designing the lecture slides. She provides dynamic small-group instruction, utilizing tailored scaffolding to effectively build student confidence and practical expertise in a critical healthcare skill. Her goal through SDAMN is to enhance outreach, promote health education, and help mentor the next generation of diverse healthcare professionals in the San Diego community.
